George Leigh Mallory
(1886-1924), MountaineerSitter in 5 portraits
Mountaineer; friend of the Bloomsbury writers and artists. An expert alpinist, Mallory made three expeditions to Mount Everest (1921, 1922, 1924), on the last of which he and A.C. Irvine made an attempt on the summit from which they never returned. In 1999 Mallory's body was recovered but it is still not clear whether they had reached their goal or perished on the ascent.
