Ordained into the Church of England in 1832, but resigned his post in 1850 and entered the Roman Catholic Church the following year; became Archbishop of Westminster, and titular head of English Catholicism, in 1865. Made a cardinal in 1875, Manning was one of the great ecclesiastical statesman of the age.
