Wrote leaders for the Manchester Guardian (1927-30); editor of New Statesman (1931-60), quadrupling the circulation and transforming a weekly of limited appeal into a political organ of worldwide influence; co-founder and joint editor of Political Quarterly; publications include The Triumph of Lord Palmerston (1924) and Father Figures (1966).
