(1719-1811), Millwright; inventor of the thrashing-machine

Sitter in 1 portrait
Scottish Inventor; established himself as a millwright near Dunbar. After various experiments, he successfully developed the labour-saving drum threshing-machine for grain which was patented in 1788 and afterwards widely used throughout the country, though owing to piracy he made no money out of it. Also invented a method of furling the sails of windmills to prevent damage.
