Bishop; fought bravely for the King in the Civil War, and during the Interregnum was a Royalist agent; was appointed Bishop of Winchester 1684; in the following year resisted Monmouth's rebellion, but interceded for victims of Jeffrey's 'Bloody Assize'; only illness prevented his protesting with the Seven Bishops against the Declaration of Indulgence (1688).
