(1782-1834), Missionary in China

Sitter in 3 portraits
The first Protestant missionary to China. He translated the Bible into Chinese in 1823, and also published a Dictionary of the Chinese Language, the standard reference work for many years. He met with little success in converting the Chinese to Christianity.
