Sitter in 2 portraits
From 1780 until 1799, Munro served as a Major-General in the British army during the Mysore Wars. After the wars concluded he worked with Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) to arrange the future administration of Mysore, which had come under British control. The two became close allies and lifelong friends. Munro returned to England in 1807 for six years and acted as an adviser to the House of Commons on questions of Indian trade and military organisation. Munro was appointed Governor of Madras in 1819 and remained in the post until 1826. His command of native languages and employment of locals in the administration made him a popular leader.
