Ann Mary Newton was a successful portraitist whose sitters included the Royal family. Born in Rome, she initially trained there under her father, the artist Joseph Severn, before moving to England to learn from the painter George Richmond who had strong leanings towards the art of ancient Rome. Newton's classical training and interest in antiquity found a match in her marriage to the Keeper of Classical Antiquities at the British Museum, Charles Newton, in 1861.
