Sir Walter Parratt(1841-1924), Composer and organist
Sitter in 5 portraits
Walter Parratt was an organist who exerted great influence by his understanding of Bach. His prodigious musical memory was evident from an early age, and at ten, he could play the whole of Bach's Das Wohltemperirte Clavier by heart. The following year he was appointed organist at a local church. Parratt worked in several churches before, in 1872, becoming organist of Magdalen College, Oxford. He later held positions as organist of St. George's Chapel, Windsor (1882), Professor of Music, Oxford (1908-18) and teacher of organ at the Royal College of Music, London (1883-1923). In 1893, he became organist to Queen Victoria. His few compositions include incidental music, and organ and choral works.
