Frederick William Pethick-Lawrence, 1st Baron Pethick-Lawrence

(1871-1961), Women's suffragist and Labour politician; MP for Leicester West and Edinburgh East and Secretary of State for India and Burma

Sitter in 17 portraits
Pethick-Lawrence trained for the Bar and worked in the East End of London with his wife Emmeline Pethick, whose name he took. Together they supported women's suffrage, were joint editors of Votes for Women (1907), and in 1912 were imprisoned. Pethick-Lawrence was a conscientious objector in 1914-18. Elected Labour MP for West Leicester in 1923, he held the seat until 1931. In 1935 he was re-elected, and in 1945 became Secretary of State for India and Burma, leading the Cabinet mission to India in 1946. He resigned over the lack of agreement between Congress and the Muslim League in 1947, but continued to support independence for India and Burma.
