Sir William Pulteney Pulteney

(1861-1941), Lieutenant-General

Sitter in 7 portraits
A rector's son, Pulteney's military career begun when he was commissioned into the Oxford Militia in 1878. He served with the Scot's Guards in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Second Boer War, and between 1908 and 1914 he commanded troops in southern Ireland. In World War I, Pulteney commanded the 3rd corps of the British expeditionary forces. Described by his chief of staff as, 'the most completely ignorant general I served during the war and that is saying a lot'. Pulteney's tactical decisions, made during the battle of the Somme in 1916 and following the battle of Cambrai in 1917, resulted in devastating casualties. Recalled to Britain in 1918, he continued to receive public honours and offices.
