Rennie was a civil engineer, specialising in railway and bridge design. On the death of his father John Rennie in 1821, he inherited the family's engineering business with his younger brother John. George supervised the mechanical engineering side of the business which included the manufacture of a great variety of machinery including the first biscuit-making machinery. In 1818, he planned railway links connecting Birmingham and Liverpool and was personally responsible for early proposals for the Midland Counties Railway (1833-36) and Central Kent Railway (1837). Rennie designed a number of bridges including for Grosvenor Bridge over the River Dee in Chester.
