Actor whose career expanded from Shakespearean roles during the 1930s to include a wide modern repertoire; his notable post-war performances included Cherry in Robert Bolt's Flowering Cherry (1957) and the Author, a part specially written for him, in William Douglas Homes's The Kingfisher (1977).
