Book collector; he remained a bachelor after George III, a personal friend, married his fiancée's younger sister and politics forbade his own match. His unrivalled collection including Caxtons and a famous Boccaccio was sold in 1812; it was on this occasion that the Roxburghe Club for publishing rare books was founded.
