Sir Osbert Sitwell
(1892-1969), WriterSir (Francis) Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, 5th Bt
Sitter in 61 portraits
Author of poetry, fiction, biography and travel writing, Sitwell joined the army in 1911 and served throughout the First World War. Although the majority of his poetry is light and satiric, his early poems, such as The Winstonburg Line (1919), are pacifist in tone. Sitwell was a supporter of the avant-garde poets Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, and a patron of the young composer William Walton, writing the libretto for his Belshazzar’s Feast in 1926. Sitwell is now best known for his five-volume autobiography Left-Hand, Right Hand (1944–50).
