Tobias George Smollett

(1721-1771), Novelist

Early Georgian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 8 portraits
With Henry Fielding, Samuel Richardson and Laurence Sterne, he was one of the first English novelists, a genre to which he brought vigorous originality and characterisation; his best known works are Roderick Random, 1748 and Humphry Clinker, 1771. He lived mostly abroad from 1763 and died at Monte Nero, near Leghorn.
