Somerset joined the British Army in 1793. He rose swiftly, and by 1801 he had attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and was placed in command of the 4th Light Dragoons. His regiment joined the Peninsular War in Portugal in 1809. Somerset commanded them in various battles and was promoted to Colonel the following year. They were involved in the Battle of Salamanca, which inflicted a damaging defeat on the French. At the Battle of Waterloo Somerset was in command of the Household Cavalry Brigade. After the battle, he was appointed to command the 1st Brigade of cavalry in the army of occupation in France in 1815, and he held this command until the army was withdrawn at the end of 1818.
