A doctor; ardent feminist and Labour MP from 1944, Edith Summerskill was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (1945-50). Campaigning hard against tuberculosis, she regarded the passing of legislation to pasteurize milk in 1949 as her 'finest hour'.
