Labouchere entered Parliament as a Whig MP in 1826. He served in a number of government offices under three prime ministers. In Earl Grey's ministry, he was Civil Lord of the Admiralty, Vice-President of the Board of Trade and Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. In 1839 he entered the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade which he held until the government fell in 1841. When the Whigs returned to office in 1846 under Lord John Russell, he returned to the Cabinet as Chief Secretary for Ireland and then once more as President of the Board of Trade. His final cabinet posting came in 1855 in the first Palmerston government, in which he served as Secretary of State for the Colonies.
