John Tidcomb

(1642-1713), Army Officer

Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 3 portraits
Born to humble parents in Wiltshire, John Tidcomb nevertheless gained a degree at Oxford University and became a captain in the army in 1685. Three years later he was involved in an army conspiracy against James II, which led to William and Mary becoming King and Queen. After this he rose quickly through the ranks, serving in Ireland, Portugal and elsewhere. He was also highly regarded for his wit, and was a member of the Kit-Cat Club.
