Sir Jonathan Trelawny, 3rd Bt

(1650-1721), Bishop of Winchester

Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter associated with 15 portraits
Ordained in 1676, he was unable to secure a preferment until the Duke of York succeeded to the throne as James II in 1685. That year he was made Bishop of Bristol. Although loyal to James, Trelawny was opposed to the King's policy of religious tolerance to Catholics and in 1688 he was one of the seven bishops who signed a petition to him asking him to reconsider his Declaration of Indulgence and was sent to the Tower. In 1689 he voted against the offer of the crown to William, Prince of Orange and Mary, but on their coronation he did take oaths of allegiance to them. Later that year he was made Bishop of Exeter and in 1706 was promoted to the Bishopric of Winchester.
