Sir George Otto Trevelyan, 2nd Bt
(1838-1928), Historian and politician; Secretary of State for Scotland and MPSitter in 7 portraits
A Liberal MP from 1865, Trevelyan served in all four of William Gladstone's administrations, although he never held any of the principal offices of state. He is best remembered for his biography of his uncle Lord Macaulay and for his part in the political events surrounding Gladstone's introduction of Irish Home Rule (1886), which Trevelyan first opposed and then reluctantly supported. His Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay (1876) is regarded as one of the best biographies in English, presenting its subject sympathetically without being partisan. Trevelyan's historical works include the Early History of Charles James Fox (1880) and six volumes on the American Revolution.
