Abraham van der Doort

(died 1640), Medallist and Surveyor of the King's Pictures

Sitter associated with 6 portraits
Little is known of van der Doort's early life. He was probably the son of Peter van Doort, an engraver of Dutch descent who was working in Hamburg in the early years of the seventeenth century. In around 1610 he arrived in England and joined the service of Henry, Prince of Wales, as Keeper of his new cabinet room. After Henry's death in 1612, his collection of paintings, medals, coins and other objects was inherited by Charles, and van der Doort accompanied the collection into Charles' service. When Charles succeeded his father as king in 1625, van der Doort became Charles' Groom of the Chamber and Surveyor of the King's Pictures.
