Patron and art collector; made a large fortune as contractor for army horses during the Napoleonic wars and used it to form the Vernon Collection of pictures by living British artists which he gave to the nation in 1847.

Could he be of the Vernon family starting with Richard de Vernon, of Normandy Viking descent, who came here almost certainly as one of William's captains at Hastings and maybe related to Admiral Vernon (Old Grog) and eventually the Vernon who was famously known as "The Father of the Turf" who was closely involved with Lord Derby?
