Spencer Horatio Walpole

(1806-1898), Politician; Home Secretary

Sitter in 16 portraits
Having trained in the law, Walpole was called to the Bar in 1831. He built up a successful practice and was made Queen 's Counsel in 1846, the same year in which he turned to politics and was elected MP. When the Tories came to power in 1852, Walpole was appointed Home Secretary in Derby's first administration. This was a short-lived post, as the government fell later that year. He was made Home Secretary twice more in Derby's subsequent administrations; firstly in 1858-9 and again in 1866.
