Bruno Walter was one of the twentieth century's pre-eminent conductors. He was also a talented pianist as well as a recording artist. He was particularly known for his performances of the works of the Austrian composers Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Born and trained in Berlin, he was assistant conductor to Mahler at the Imperial Opera in Vienna from 1901 until 1913. After periods in other cities, he became music director of the Vienna State Opera in 1935. In 1938, he went to France and then to the U.S., where he appeared with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera (New York City) and other leading orchestras.
