Famously modest and retiring, Webb was a key artist in the Arts and Crafts Movement, co-founding with Morris the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1877. He also partnered with Morris, (as well as the artists Burne-Jones and Rossetti) in the interior decorating and furnishing business, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., later to become Morris & Co.. Jane Morris referred to him as 'dear friend' from the time he built the Morris' first home, Red House, for which he is perhaps most well known. Webb also created embroidery patterns for Jane, and designed the family tombstone for Kelmscott churchyard.
