Classical scholar and archaeologist; author of 'Ruins of Palmyra', 1753, and 'Ruins of Balbec', 1757; one of the first to investigate authorship of the 'Iliad'' published 'Essay on the Original Genius of Homer', 1769. Under-Secretary of State 1756-63. In Rome, as tutor to 3rd Duke of Bridgewater; 1755, he met and influenced Robert Adam and Ramsay.
