Sir Jeffry Wyatville
(1766-1840), Architect; nephew of James WyattRegency Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter associated with 10 portraits
Trained by his uncles Samuel Wyatt and James Wyatt, who were both leading architects, he quickly became pre-eminent as an improver of existing properties. Indeed, only about one-fifth of his commissions were for completely new buildings, with the majority being for additions, alterations, or for estate and garden buildings. Wyatville was working at a time when the improvement of properties was extremely popular in order to answer new demands for comfort and convenience. By the time he died, he had been employed by four sovereigns, over forty of the nobility and many other distinguished gentlemen. He is mainly remembered for making alterations and extensions to Windsor Castle and Chatsworth House.
