William Alwyn
(1905-1985), ComposerSitter in 6 portraits
Alwyn entered the Royal Academy of Music aged fifteen, returning later to teach composition. His output included five symphonies, four operas and over 200 film scores including A Night to Remember (1958). He was an artist and a poet, writing the libretti for two of his operas. A virtuoso flautist, Alwyn played for a time with the London Symphony Orchestra. He continued to compose into his last years, producing his third quartet in 1984.
