Stage and film director. Anderson began his career as a film critic. Anderson became a forceful member of George Devine's team at the Royal Court Theatre from 1957. He directed a number of plays during this period including Arden's Serjeant Musgrave's Dance (1959) and the play he co-authored with Richard Harris, The Diary of a Madman (1963); This Sporting Life (1963) in the realist tradition preceded the satiric trilogy, ruthless in its attack on British Society: Iif... (1968), O! Lucky Man (1973) and Britannia Hospital (1982).
