Artist, print-maker, book illustrator and graphic designer. Bawden visited the Middle East as an Official War Artist (1940-5), but is probably best known for watercolours of domestic interiors and paintings of his native Essex. His illustrated books include The Histories of Herodotus and Salammbô.
