Film actor and writer. Born in Hampstead, London, Bogarde made his film debut in 1940. After serving in the Second World War he was signed to Rank films and starred as a popular romantic male lead in films from 1950 and in the Doctor series (1954-63), In Doctor at Sea (1955) he played opposite Brigitte Bardot. Bogarde's later roles in Joseph Losey's The Servant (1963), and Visconti's Death in Venice (1971), The Night Porter (1973) showed an increasing depth and range. He is the author of seven novels (1980-97) and eight volumes of autobiography (1977-95).
