Film actor and writer. Born in Hampstead, London, Bogarde studied art under Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland at Chelsea Polytechnic during which time he acted occasionally. During the war he worked for the army intelligence photographic unit and was present at the liberation of Bergen-Belsen. After the war he was signed to Rank films and starred as a popular romantic male lead in films from 1950 and in the Doctor series (1954-63), In Doctor at Sea (1955) he played opposite Brigitte Bardot. In 1961 he bought out his contract with Rank Studios and subsequently explored characters that were often anguished and tormented in films, as in Joseph Losey's The Servant (1963), and Visconti's Death in Venice (1971), The Night Porter (1973) showed an increasing depth and range. He is the author of seven novels (1980-97) and eight volumes of autobiography (1977-95).
