William Burges

(1827-1881), Architect and designer

Later Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 3 portraits
William Burges was one of England's most notable Gothic Revival architects. He studied medieval architecture, travelling widely in Europe and Turkey. He established his own architectural practice in 1856. He designed the Brisbane Cathedral, Australia, in 1859 and St. Finbar's Cathedral in Cork in 1862. In 1865, Burges started an extensive restoration of Cardiff Castle, making many extensions to the existing apartments and directing an elaborate scheme of interior decoration. He later worked on a similar project at nearby Castle Coch. Burges' rebuilding of Cardiff Castle and the complete reconstruction of the ruin of Castle Coch, north of the city, represent his highest achievements.

Well, I can tell you his design for St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane was never built, and the existing cathedral is to the designs of J L Pearson. And I could mention that Castle Coch is much more commonly referred to as Castell Coch. A great deal more information can be found in his excellent Wikipedia article. Thank heavens for the person who wrote that. Yours ever, KJP1.
