Edward Burra

(1905-1976), Painter

Edward John Burra

Sitter in 3 portraits
Artist of 3 portraits
Painter. Born in London, Burra studied at Chelsea School of Art (1921-3) and the Royal College of Art (1923-4). He worked in large scale watercolours, as his chronic arthritis made working in oils too painful. Burra was among the first to respond to emergent African-American urban culture and a journey to New York produced a series of wry paintings of Harlem. He also travelled widely in Europe and Mexico. In 1929 his first solo exhibition was held at the Leicester Galleries and he later exhibited with the English Surrealists (1936 and 1938). A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Tate Gallery in 1973.
