Sitter in 15 portraits
Distinguished Second World War bomber pilot. Cheshire was the official British observer at the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 15 August 1945, an experience which briefly made him a pacifist. He founded the Cheshire Homes for the Disabled (1948) and, with his wife Sue Ryder, the Ryder Cheshire Mission for the Relief of Suffering (1959). Cheshire himself had motor neurone disease from which he died on 31 July 1992, aged 74.
