George Douglas Howard Cole

(1889-1959), University teacher, writer and socialist

Sitter in 12 portraits
Contributor to the New Statesman between the Wars, and regarded as the most influential socialist thinker of the period; elected Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory at Oxford in 1944; Chairman, and later President of the Fabian Society, founder of the New Fabian Research Bureau in 1931. Became Chairman of the Nuffield College Reconstruction Survey (February 1941), which looked at planning for post-war Britain and Vice-President of the Workers' Education Association (1927-37). Written works include The World of Labour (1913), The Intelligent Man's Guide Through World Chaos (1932) and Chartists Portraits (1941).
