Alastair Arthur, 2nd Duke of Connaught and Strathearn

(1914-1943), Son of Prince Arthur; great-grandson of Queen Victoria

Sitter associated with 7 portraits
Alastair Arthur was the son of Prince Arthur of Connaught, the only son of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Princess Luise Margarete of Prussia. His mother was Princess Arthur of Connaught, the eldest daughter of Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife and The Princess Louise, Princess Royal. In 1935, he entered the Army and spent several years in Egypt before being transferred to Canada in 1939. He served as an aide-de-camp to Earl of Athlone, then the Governor General of Canada. The circumstances of his death in 1943 are somewhat unusual: he apparently fell asleep or passed out in front of an open window and died from hypothermia during the night.
