Hungarian-born publisher; in 1951 with Diana Athill he set up André Deutsch Ltd, an independent publishing house that maintained its position in the market until the 1980s. The firm discovered and published writers such as V. S. Naipaul and Mordecai Richler in the late 1950s and introduced the British reading public to American writers such as John Updike, Philip Roth and Jack Kerouac.
