Born in Leamington, Frost left school at fourteen. He enlisted in 1939, joined the Commandos and was captured and imprisoned. A fellow prisoner-of-war, Adrian Heath, encouraged him to paint. He attended evening classes at Birmingham College of Art and St Ives School of Painting before going to Camberwell School of Art (1947-9). Between 1952-4 he was the pupil of, and later assistant to, Barbara Hepworth, and became a member of the Penwith Society of Arts. A member of the post-war 'constructionist' group, he was in Patrick Heron's Space in Colour show in 1953. Frost later taught at Coventry, Reading and Newcastle, and in Canada. He was knighted in 1998.
