Indira Gandhi(1917-1984), Prime Minister of India
Sitter in 2 portraits
Gandhi was Prime Minister of India 1966-77 and again 1980-1984. A member of the politically-influential Nehru family, she joined the national Congress Party after studying at Oxford University, becoming leader in 1966. She enjoyed periods of great popularity, but her time in office was controversial. Her hard-line response to Sikh demands for an independent state led to her assassination.
