Douglas McGarel Hogg, 1st Viscount Hailsham

(1872-1950), Lawyer, politician and Lord Chancellor

Hogg joined the family firm of sugar merchants before embarking on a career as a lawyer and politician. Called to the Bar, 1902, he became King's Counsel, 1917, and established a reputation in the civil law and commercial sectors. In 1922 he was made Attorney-General and elected as Conservative MP for Marylebone. Appointed Lord Chancellor and given the title Lord Hailsham, 1931, he served as Secretary of State for War and Leader of the House of Lords, 1931-5.
