Arnold Lionel David Haskell
(1903-1980), Ballet criticSitter in 2 portraits
Balletomane. Born and educated in London, Haskell read law at Cambridge, but did not finish his degree. He went briefly into business, and then became a reader for William Heinemann Ltd (1927-32). A joint-founder of the Comargo Society, he published Balletomania (1934) which was so successful that the neologism entered the language. Haskell had an entrée to Diaghilev's Ballets Russes when his friend Alicia Markova joined in 1925, and he worked on the Russian Ballet's American and Australian Tours (1933-4 and 1938-9). He was asked to become director of the new Royal Ballet School by Ninette de Valois (1946-65). As a writer, Haskell succeeded in popularising ballet as an art form beyond a social elite.
