Sir Freddie Laker(1922-2006), Chairman of Laker Airways

The pioneer of cheap air travel, Laker started his career as an aircraft factory floor sweeper. His first airline 'Aviation Traders' was founded in 1946 with surplus wartime aircraft. He was Managing Director of Laker Airways Ltd (1966-82). A hugely popular service, Skytrain (1982-3) specialised in cut-price transatlantic flights and broke the monopoly of the larger airlines. Unfair competition eventually forced it out of business, but Laker continued to work in the aviation industry.
