Novelist, critic and journalist; wrote a number of successful novels including The Victorian Chaise-Longue (1953) and works of criticism which addressed issues of class and the situation of women. She became Vice Chairwoman of the Arts Council in 1982 and Chairwoman of its Literature Panel from 1980 to 1984.
