Iain Norman Macleod

Sitter in 8 portraits
A leading bridge player, Macleod turned to politics after the Second World War. He unsuccessfully contested a seat at the 1945 general election and then joined the Conservative Parliamentary Secretariat. He was elected MP in 1950. In the Eden and Macmillan governments, he served first as Minister of Labour and National Service and then as Secretary of State for the Colonies. Here he presided over considerable decolonisation, seeing Nigeria, British Somaliland, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Kuwait and British Cameroon become independent. He later served as Leader of the House of Commons, Chairman of the Conservative Party, and was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer just weeks before his death.
