James Mason
(1909-1984), ActorSitter in 10 portraits
After receiving a degree in architecture from the University of Cambridge (1931), Mason began his acting career on stage before making his British film debut in Late Extra (1935). He established his career as a romantic villain in films such as The Seventh Veil (1945). Following his critically acclaimed role as a wounded Irish bank robber in Odd Man Out (1946), Mason moved to America in 1947. Among later notable successes were performances in Hitchcock's North by Northwest (1959) and the role of Humbert Humbert in Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Nabokov's Lolita (1962).
