Harriet Mill (née Hardy)

(1807-1858), Writer; women's rights advocate; wife of John Stuart Mill

Sitter in 1 portrait
Harriet Mill was an early advocate of votes for women. Her views on equality influenced her second husband John Stuart Mill, who went on to present to parliament the first petition demanding votes for women in 1866. Harriet Mill's newspaper articles on the enfranchisement of women (1851) and domestic violence (1858) were widely read. Although uncredited on their original publication, she also contributed to John Stuart Mill's major work Political Economy, and The Subjection of Women, published posthumously in 1869 which also included the contributions of her daughter Harriet Taylor.
