Sir John Lewis Ernest Watts Mills

Actor, husband of writer Mary Hayley Bell and father of actresses Hayley and Juliet Mills. Making his film debut in The Midshipmaid (1932), Mills went on to become one of Britain's leading screen personalities of the 1940s in films such as In Which We Serve (1942), The Way to the Stars (1945) and Great Expectations (1946). In the 1950s he starred in a number of dramas including Ice Cold in Alex and I Was Monty's Double (both 1958). He later won an Oscar for his supporting role in Ryan's Daughter. Knighted in 1977.
